What to Expect As You Grow Older: Mayo Clinic Update

By Tucker Sutherland, editor

Aug. 17, 2004 - It looks like I am deteriorating right on schedule, according to the online information provided by the Mayo Clinic’s Senior Health Center.

This recently updated feature – “What to Expect as You Grow Older” – is the best online article I have found to capture the information most of us are seeking about the changes in our body as we age. It is particularly useful because it is brief and to the point.

“Regardless of how long you live, time takes a toll on the organs and systems in your body,” states the article. “How and when this occurs is unique to you.”

The article deals with “typical changes to expect” as we age. These changes are organized by body parts and functions. This is the list of topics.

> Cardiovascular

> Bones, muscles and joints

> Digestive system

> Kidneys, bladder and urinary tract

> Brain and nervous system

> Eyes

> Ears

> Teeth

> Skin, nails and hair

> Sleep

> Weight

> Sexuality

The concluding section is titled, “How long can you live.”

Through out the sections are links to other information on the Mayo Clinic Website. Most of these links are to information about specific ailments. In the section on eyes, for example, there are links to information of on Dry eyes, Presbyopia, Cataracts, Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration.

There are also links to several interesting slide shows, such as, “How four seniors stay mentally sharp” and “How aging affects your skin.”

In the Senior Health Center, where this article is found, you will also find other very helpful and useful information. There are screening tests for men and women and an interesting aging quiz, “Secrets of Longevity.”

This is certainly a site we recommend and one you may want to bookmark for future reference.
