Senior Citizens Most Likely to Honor and Practice Social Responsibility

Harris Poll finds only 8% of adults rate social responsibility highly

June 20, 2007 – Senior citizens, in this case adults age 62 and older, are more likely than younger people to take “social responsibility” seriously and “practice what they preach,” according to a new Harris Poll. But only about 8 percent of U.S. adults believe social responsibility is a good idea and of high importance.

From a series of questions Harris classified people by their responses into three categories:

   1. Practice What They Preach - for this group, individual, as well as corporate, social responsibility is extremely important.

   2. Good Intentions - they believe that social responsibility is a good idea, and they do what they can in terms of volunteering, but they do not sacrifice huge amounts of time or money.

   3. To Thine Own Self Be True - for this group, social responsibility has little consequence in their lives.

Among all ages, 8 percent were classified in the “Practice What The Preach” group, but 11 percent of the most mature group (62 and over) fell into this top category.

Harris put 67 percent of all adults in the “Good Intentions” group. The Matures led all age groups with 71 percent.

And, in the bottom category – To Thine Own Self Be True – the seniors had only 17 percent, compared to 25 percent of all adults.
