America's Lizzie Bolden Dies at 116 as World's Oldest Person

Oldest person now Puerto Rican man who is also oldest living U.S. veteran

December 12, 2006 – Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bolden, maybe the only person ever to be declared the "oldest living person" in the world on two occasions, died yesterday in a Tennessee nursing home at the age of 116. The new title holder is Emiliano Mercado del Toro of Puerto Rico, already recognized as the oldest living man in the world, who was listed yesterday by the Gerontology Research Group as being 115 years and 112 days old. Del Toro is also the oldest living U.S. veteran. (Read more below this news story.)

Bolden became the oldest living woman and person in the world for the second time on August 27, as the result of the death of Maria Esther Capovilla of Ecuador, who was found to be older than Bolden last December and given the recognition Bolden had held since last August of 2005. The Ecuadorian woman died from pneumonia only days from her 117th birthday.

Bolden died at Mid-South Health and Rehabilitation Center in Memphis, where she had lived for several years.

Named by the Guinness World Records earlier this year as the world's oldest living person, Bolden was born on Aug. 15, 1890.

She suffered a stroke in 2004, and her family said she spoke little after that and slept most of the day.

According to family members, Bolden had seven children, 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great-grandchildren, 220 great-great-great grandchildren and 75 great-great-great-great grandchildren.

She was named the world's oldest living person following the death of Maria Esther de Capovilla of Ecuador in August.

Bolden was born Elizabeth Jones on Aug. 15, 1890 in Somerville, Tennessee. Bolden suffered a stroke in 2004, and her family said she spoke little after that and slept much of the time.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported last August that Bolden had two living children, 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great-grandchildren, 220 great-great-great grandchildren and 75 great-great-great-great grandchildren.

By Tucker Sutherland, editor

Dec. 3, 2005 – The Yemen Observer reported last week on a man there that claims to be 130 years old. Officially, no person has ever celebrated a 123rd birthday. Read more...
