Oldest Living Man Celebrates 112th Birthday in Japan
Tomoji Tanabe does not drink or smoke but reads his
newspaper daily
Sept. 18, 2007 It was happy birthday yesterday
for the worlds oldest man, Tomoji Tanabe, who turned 112. Saying again
that he wants to live forever, Tanabe does not drink alcohol or smoke.
He does read his newspaper every day and write in his diary.
He is still one of the youngest men to hold the
title in many years. Tanabe celebrated in his hometown of Miyazaki,
Japan, with rice, miso soup and seaweed. Tanabe was born Sept. 18, 1895
Tanabe became the oldest man in the world last
January at the death of Emiliana Mercado Del Toro, a Puerto Rican and
U.S. Army veteran, who had reached the age of 115. Tanabe was awarded
what is considered the official title by Guinness World Records on June
18, 2007.
Until August, Japan also was home for the oldest
living woman and person in the world.
Yone Minagawa, a widow living in a nursing home,
died on August 14 at the age of 114 in her hometown of Fukukoka, Japan.
Born January 4, 1893, Mrs. Minagawa was already in her 50's when Japan
surrendered in World War II. She had been certified as the world's
oldest person by the Guinness Book of World Records after Emma Faust
Tillman, the daughter of freed American slaves, died in January.
The oldest person in Japan is now
Tsuneyo Toyonaga, who is 113 years old.
Now the oldest living woman and person in the world
is
114-year-old
American
Edna Parker.
Japan has the largest population of centenarians in
the world and the number is expected to top 30,000 by the end of
September, the health ministry said in a recent report.
