Kmart Says Its 90-Day Deal on Generic Drugs is
Better than Wal-Mart's 30-Day
Kmart's plan -
already nationwide - offers 90-day supply for $15
September
22, 2006 – Kmart says it has a better deal on generic drugs for senior
citizens trying to buy prescription drugs after falling in the "doughnut
hole" of most Medicare drug plans. Wal-Mart said yesterday it will offer
generic drugs at $4 for a 30-day supply. Kmart says its deal, already in
place nationwide, is a 90-day supply for $15.
In response to Wal-Mart's decision to offer $4
costs on limited generic drugs and initially at a limited number of
Wal-Mart stores, Kmart reiterated its support for its 90-Day Generics
Program, which is "more convenient," it says with the 90-day supply.
The Kmart program, which began in May of this year,
has been in effect in all 1,100 Kmart pharmacies nationwide, and the
company says it "provides added economic, time and compliance value."
"While Wal-Mart's program appears to be a
cost-saver at first glance, Kmart's 90-day program is a better value and
time saver for customers, allowing them to return to the store every
three months instead of every 30 days to refill their prescriptions,"
says Mark Doerr, vice president, Kmart Pharmacy.
"The $15 cost spread over three months ultimately
means that customers are paying $5 a month for refills, but saving money
on gas and valuable time associated with frequent trips to the
pharmacy."
Moreover, according to Doerr, the program helps
customers remain compliant with their drug treatment regimens by taking
their medications when prescribed. "Customers who are refilling every
three months are more likely to remember to take their medications, and
less likely to worry about running low at the end of each month."

September 21, 2006 –By the end of this month, four
million Medicare-eligible senior citizens and disabled, averaging seven
prescriptions per month, are estimated to fall into the Medicare Part D
"doughnut hole," a nearly $3,000 coverage gap where their drugs are no
longer paid for by their drug plan, yet, they must continue to pay the
monthly premium. A new study indicates about 16 percent will just stop
taking their medications.

Asclepios
newsletter says administration brags that the average Part D premium is
going down, but it fails to mention that all other out-of-pocket is

September 22, 2006 – There is a storm of concern
over the millions of senior citizens falling into the "doughnut hole" in
Medicare drug plans, which is where seniors continue to pay their
premiums but get no help on buying drugs. If it is bad this year, wait
until next year when the "doughnut hole" gets even bigger, according to
