How to Pick a Medicare Advantage Plan: Consumer Reports

CR’s October issue has lots of tools to help with your decision and ranking of  MA plans

Our advice is to ignore them. There are better, unbiased ways to pick the right plan for you, according to a Consumer Reports.

The magazine has again added a number of tools in the October issue to help senior citizens during Medicare Open Enrollment. This  report focuses on Medicare Advantage plans, including CR’s ratings.

The report offers step-by-step advice on evaluating plans, starting with the one you currently use.

“If you like the plan you have, you don't have to do anything. But it's a good idea to check anyway to see if you can get a better deal with another plan,” says the CR report.

Some of the tips for choosing a plan include details on these topics:

Quality ratings. Medicare gives star ratings for health plan quality, with the top rating being five stars.

Co-pays, deductibles, etc. If you click on a plan's name, you will be able to see the details of the plan.

List of participating doctors and hospitals. With very few exceptions, Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks.

Dental and vision coverage. Many Advantage plans come with some dental and vision coverage.

Coverage while traveling.  Many plans will only pay for emergency care when you are away from home.

And, as we all have come to expect from Consumer Reports, it has rated all the plans by areas.
