Oct. 13, 2015 - As senior citizens do their research in preparation for Medicare Open Enrollment that begins on Wednesday, an important reference to use is the Medicare & You 2015 handbook, which provides information on Medicare provisions for the new year. The paper edition was mailed to all Medicare enrollees in October but if you have not received it, it is available online or as a download to your eReader or other digital devices.

The 152-page book contains a summary of Medicare benefits, coverage decisions, rights and protections, and answers to the most frequently asked questions about Medicare. The official webpage for the handbook explains more of the features and points out important new information.

Medicare & You 2015 online is in the easy-to-use and easy-to-search pdf format. It is also should be easy to use for seniors accustomed to reading ebooks on digital devices. If you choose to download the handbooks – called the “eHandbook” in this case – you will not be taken off the mail list to receive the printed book.

But, Medicare is now making available, a paperless option for those who want future editions of the book online.

Get it Online

Medicare says, “Sign up at Medicare.gov/gopaperless to get your future “Medicare & You” information electronically (also called the “eHandbook”). We’ll send you an email next September when the new eHandbook is available.

“The online version of the handbook contains all the same information you get in the printed version. Even better, the information on the web is updated regularly, so you can instantly find the most up-to-date Medicare information. You won’t get a printed copy of your handbook in the mail if you choose to get it electronically.”

Get it as eBook - for eReader, iPad, NOOK, Sony Reader, Kindle

Medicare says, “Visit Medicare.gov/publications to download a free digital version of this handbook to your eReader. This option is available for all eReader devices. You can get the same important information that’s included in the printed version in an easy-to-read format that you can take anywhere you go. You’ll still get a printed copy of the handbook in the mail if you choose to download the digital version.”

Medicare does add a couple of disclaimers:

>> The information in this booklet describes the Medicare program at the time this booklet was printed. Changes may occur after printing. Visit Medicare.gov, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1‑800‑633‑4227) to get the most current information. TTY users should call 1‑877‑486‑2048.

>> “Medicare & You” isn’t a legal document. Official Medicare Program legal guidance is contained in the relevant statutes, regulations, and rulings.
