Great for Seniors: Website Sends Email Reminders of
Medical Tests
Cholesterol testing on top of list of six email
alerts that are available
March 2, 2006 – It could be just what the doctor
ordered for a senior citizen or their caregiver – a Website that will
automatically send a reminder to have a cholesterol test. Actually, this
service by the College of American Pathologists will email reminders on
four other types of health testing and to donate blood.
"One of the most common causes of stroke and heart
attack is a condition known as atherosclerosis, in which cholesterol,
carried in the blood as LDL cholesterol, and other substances accumulate
in the walls of the arteries," explains Arthur McTighe, MD, FCAP, chief
pathologist at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
"By reducing cholesterol levels through regular
screening and healthier choices, many people can cut their risk for
cardiovascular disease significantly."
It is widely known that too much cholesterol in the
blood can lead to cardiovascular disease - the leading cause of death
for both women and men in the United States. But statistics show that
many of us still need to make the simple diet and lifestyle changes that
can prevent cardiovascular disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), 61 million people in the U.S. - nearly one-fourth of
the population - have some form of cardiovascular disease. An estimated
1.2 million Americans will have a heart attack this year and more than
700,000 Americans will suffer a stroke.
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) would
like to see those numbers reduced in 2006 and encourages Americans to
schedule a cholesterol test reminder through its free health-test
reminder service at
www.MyHealthTestReminder.com.
This service may also be helpful to children or
other caretakers of senior citizens to help them remember to have the
senior tested on a regular basis.

Although most people know that they need to monitor
their cholesterol, many say that they are 'too busy' or simply 'forget'
to schedule regular cholesterol tests. The CAP believes that providing a
reminder will help more people get tested more often.
In less than one minute, users can log onto
www.MyHealthTestReminder.com, choose the health test reminder(s) they
want to receive, and designate a reminder date.
The site will automatically send a private e-mail
reminder on the requested date. This bilingual, confidential Web site
does not accept advertising; and none of the user-provided information
is shared with outside parties.
"A screening test is really the only way to
determine if your cholesterol level is too high," said Dr. McTighe.
"Also, if you are tested at a facility other than
your regular doctor's office, make sure your test results break down LDL
cholesterol and triglycerides, in addition to total and HDL cholesterol,
and that you share those results with your doctor."
The CAP recommends that all adults age 20 years or
older should have their cholesterol checked every five years. Men
over 45 and women over 55 should be tested more frequently, according to
their physicians' advice.
In addition to cholesterol test reminders,
www.MyHealthTestReminder.com also offers free e-mail reminders for
other early-detection screening - including colon examinations, diabetes
testing, mammograms, and Pap tests - along with information about the
tests.
"Since a simple blood test can indicate a problem
long before symptoms are noticed," said Dr. McTighe, "you have the
opportunity to make any necessary diet and lifestyle changes in order to
prevent serious disease, rather than react to it. As a doctor, I
encourage everyone to get serious about health- care screening by taking
advantage of the many resources available to them."
The College of American Pathologists is a medical
society serving nearly 16,000 physician members and the laboratory
community throughout the world. It is the world's largest association
composed exclusively of pathologists and is widely considered the leader
in laboratory quality assurance. The College is an advocate for
high-quality and cost-effective medical care.
