Recognition
There are 56 million grandparents in U.S.; only 3
million greeting cards sold for their day!
By Tucker Sutherland, editor
August 21, 2006 – The national recognition of
Grandparents Day has had a hard time becoming a date people remember. It
is coming up again – September 10 – and already there is a whole panel
of Grandparents Day greeting cards on display, at least at the CVS
pharmacy I checked. It has not been a big seller in the past but maybe
this is the year it takes hold. Below are some interesting facts about
grandparents you may not know.

The first presidential proclamation for
Grandparents Day was issued in 1978, and one has been issued each year
since — designating the first Sunday after Labor Day as National
Grandparents Day.
Grandparents Day was the brainchild of Marian
McQuade of Fayette County, W.Va., who hoped that such an observance
might persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage of their
grandparents.
In honor of our nation’s grandparents, the Census
Bureau presents an array of data about these unsung role models and
caregivers.
