Older Americans Month in May Features Walk on National Mall

This year’s theme is “Celebrate Long-Term Living”

March 29, 2005 - This May, the celebration of Older Americans Month, will carry the theme "Celebrate Long-Term Living," which was selected to "honor older Americans as a national treasure, and to highlight the need for mid-life and older persons to be prepared to live longer than previous generations," according to the Administration on Aging. To promote this year’s event older Americans and government agencies that serve them will join with the AoA on May 4 for a 30-minute walk on the National Mall in Washington DC. AoA will also provide tools and tips for healthy living, refreshments “and more!”

“We are entering a new era in this country and in our community. Next year, the 78 million baby boomers will begin turning 60. We need to consider this momentous demographic change in the aging of our population. Older adults and baby boomers need to make thoughtful choices now so they will be more likely to remain healthy, productive, and financially secure in their later lives,” says a news release prepared for organizations to use in promoting the event in their communities.

“The AoA wants all Americans to know that better planning, better community-based long-term care options and more consumer-friendly systems, are allowing more older Americans to remain vibrant and independent,” says the release.

The news release is just one of many tools the AoA is providing for promotion of this annual event. These tools can be downloaded from their Website – Click Here.

Sponsoring a Local Celebrate Long-Term Living event in your community.

The agency also provides an online planning guide to help plan a local “Celebrate Long-Term Living!” event The AoA encourages organizations and groups around the country to sponsor local events, which should promote this year’s goal of increasing physical activity and healthy lifestyles for older Americans. To help in setting up local events, they have provided planning and media materials. The materials are set up in a “Swiss cheese” format which allows you to insert your organizational name, spokespeople, logo, and any other local information that should be highlighted. These tools can be downloaded from their Website – Click Here.

“We would love to help highlight and promote your event on the AoA website, too,” says AoA. “If you would like your “Celebrate Long-Term Living!” event posted, please complete the participation form. Click Here.
