movies that does not include vampires, werewolves or some other beast, a comedy film about senior citizens has just become one of the top
films in the world.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a sleeper of a hit with old and young alike, showing audiences do care about the
lives of older folks, writes Betsey Bruner, Arts and Culture Editor,
Arizona Daily Sun, in her thumbs up review of the movie about British senior citizens who retire to India.
She is among many calling it a sleeper.
Today it was announced the film has reached $100 million in worldwide gross receipts. The film has amassed nearly $20
million in U.S. box-office receipts since it began its platform release May 4th. Opening in select cities, it has become the seventh highest
grossing film for Fox
Searchlight Pictures in just over three weeks also making it the highest grossing specialty film of 2012.
As it expanded to over 1200 screens over the Memorial Day holiday, the film came in with a four-day box-office gross of
$8.4 million, placing it #8 in the top ten films behind tent-poles playing on nearly three times as many screens. The film had already
grossed $81.2M overseas since February.
The movie features a cast of older British actors, including
Judi Dench,
Maggie Smith,
Tom Wilkinson, and
Bill Nighy, and
tells the story of these older English pensioners who seek to retire at what they are led to believe is an upscale hotel in India. It turns
out to not live up to its luxury billing but has a charm of its own.
The long list of reviewers on
Rotten Tomatoes seems to like it, too.
