Julie Christie Stars in New Film about a Couple's
Struggle with Alzheimer's Disease
'Away from Her' tells story of a 50-year marriage and
its memories
 Feb. 14, 2007 - Julie Christie stars as Fiona in
"Away from Her," a movie planned for release on May 4 that will touch
the hearts of many senior citizens. It is described as "a beautifully
moving love story" that deals with memory and its circuitous, enigmatic
paths over the course of a long marriage.
Married for almost 50 years, Fiona's and Grant's
(Gordon Pinsent), commitment to each other appears unwavering, and their
everyday life is full of tenderness and humor. This serenity is broken
only by the occasional, carefully restrained reference to the past,
giving a sense that this marriage may not always have been such a fairy
tale.
This tendency of Fionas to make such references,
along with her increasingly evident memory loss, creates a tension that
is usually brushed off casually by both of them. But when it is no
longer possible for either of them to ignore the fact that Fiona is
being consumed by Alzheimers disease, the limits of their love and
loyalty must be wrenchingly redefined.
"Away from Her" is the lyrical screenplay
adaptation of celebrated author Alice Munro's short story The Bear
Came Over The Mountain,
 Olympia Dukakis is in the film, which also stars
Wendy Crewson, Michael Murphy, Kristen Thomson, and Alberta Watson.
Reportedly "beloved by critics and audiences alike"
at its 2006 Toronto International Film Festival premiere, "Away from
Her" marks the feature screenwriting and directorial debut of female
filmmaker, Canadian actress Sarah Polley.
Distributed by Lionsgate, the movie is a Film Farm
and Foundry Films production in association with Capri Releasing, HanWay
Films and Echo Lake Prods.
