Elderly Drivers: A Growing Concern

July 2003 - The accident yesterday involving an 86-year-old driver who left 8 dead after plowing his car through a street market, again raises questions about the safety of elderly drivers.

"...there's cause for concern when elderly people do drive because they have higher rates of fatal crashes than all but the youngest drivers, especially per mile driven." Online report on Elderly Drivers by  Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Opening of 2003 Budget

"Recent statistics indicate that traffic crashes claim more than 40,000 lives annually, accounting for over 90 percent of transportation-related deaths and the leading cause of death for persons age 4 through 33. The economic cost of motor vehicle crashes is more than $150 billion annually. Emerging demographic trends, such as a continuing increase in the number of drivers and a significant growth in both elderly and teenage drivers, pose increased traffic safety challenges that must be addressed."
