Walmart Adds Generic for Plavix on Saturday, More Generics on Way
The company that led on making generic drugs more affordable, more pop
ular with seniors will roll out a dozen
more this year
May 17, 2012 – Walmart, the company that was the first to make drastic reductions in the price of generic drugs for
senior citizens, announced yesterday that it will be among the first retailers to offer Clopidogrel, the generic version of Plavix.
Clopidogrel will be available at all Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies on May 19.
Clopidogrel is the latest of the thousands of generic medications Walmart offers, allowing Americans to access quality,
effective medication alternatives for a more affordable price.
Clopidogrel is used to prevent strokes and heart attacks in patients at risk for these problems.
Clopidogrel is in a class of medications called antiplatelet drugs. It works by helping to prevent harmful blood clots
that may cause heart attacks or strokes.
Clopidogrel is also sometimes used to prevent blood clots in people with mitral valve disease (a
condition that affects the valve that separates the left upper and lower chambers of the heart) prosthetic
(artificial) heart valves, and people undergoing certain heart procedures such as coronary artery stent placement.
Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition. (More

“Many of our customers struggle with the cost of health care in America and forego filling prescriptions to make ends
meet,” said Dr. John Agwunobi, president of Walmart U.S. health and wellness.
“Walmart is focused on bringing our customers the lowest prices on the products and services they need to stay healthy,
including aggressively delivering new generic medications as they are released.”
Walmart is committed to delivering generic alternatives to name-brand medications as soon as they become available. This
year a number of popular medications will be released as generic equivalents, including:

Walmart also offers hundreds of prescriptions at $4 for a 30-day supply and $10 for a 90-day supply through its
Affordable Prescription Program,
and reports it has saved Americans more than $4.8 billion on their prescriptions since the program launched in 2006.
The Walmart Prescription Program includes up to a 30-day supply for $4 and a 90-day supply for $10 of covered generic
drugs at commonly prescribed dosages. Higher dosages cost more. Prices for some drugs covered by the Prescription Program may be higher and
may vary in some states.
The savings estimate is based on the cost of the prescription drugs in the Affordable Prescription Program compared to
the cost of the same drugs at Walmart before the Program's launch in 2006.
