Most Adults Wont Give Up Sex for
Staying Young, Senior Citizens Wont Give Up Coffee
April 20, 2004 What are Americans willing to give
up for a drink from the Fountain of Youth? Not sex, for those 18 to
64, and not coffee for those over 64.
Half of men and a third of women ages 18 to 64 in a
February 2004 survey of 1,000 adults by Body Confident(TM) said they
would not give up sex for eternal youth. Those in the 64-and-over age
group named coffee (18 percent) as the item they are not willing to
exchange.
While 13 percent of Americans admitted they are not
willing to give up anything for a sip of the youthful nectar, 15 percent
would cease their intake of dessert and chocolate, 10 percent would
surrender their coffee cup and nine percent would trade in their cable
box.
Although perpetual youth is a myth, the reality of
feeling and looking young is on the minds of Americans. Instead of
sitting back, preparing to grow old gracefully, they're fighting it all
the way. More than half (51 percent) of respondents said they are
somewhat to very concerned about protecting their bodies against the
signs and affects of aging. A healthy and balanced diet (59 percent),
routine exercise (54 percent), regular physician visits (52 percent),
vitamins and supplements (48 percent) and decreased sun exposure (44
percent) are the top methods men and women use for their anti-aging
defense.
For those Americans who use dietary
supplements, more women than men (46 percent vs. 32 percent) take them
for a specific health condition while more men than women take them to
change their looks (37 percent vs. 22 percent). An equal number of men
and women seek supplements as an aging preventative (23 percent). In
fact, the largest age group to take supplements for anti-aging is 45 to
54.
The concern of physically feeling old (41
percent) may keep Americans more devoted to their anti-aging regimen
than their concern for mentally feeling old (22 percent). Sagging skin
is the biggest aging worry for those ages 18 to 24 (20 percent) while
the 65-and-over age segment are exasperated by the appearance of
wrinkles. Hair loss and graying was the top physical anguish for men (18
percent).
